Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of year to experience the giant waves in Nazaré?

The giant waves in Nazaré are a seasonal phenomenon, typically occurring during the winter months, from October to March. This is when the North Atlantic storms create the optimal conditions for the massive swells that break on Praia do Norte, attracting big-wave surfers from around the world. While the views from Sítio are impressive year-round, the most dramatic wave displays are observed during this period.

Are there any specific dress code requirements for visiting the Sanctuary of Fátima?

While there is no strict dress code enforced at the Sanctuary of Fátima, it is respectful to dress modestly. This generally means covering your shoulders and knees. Comfortable walking shoes are also recommended, as there is a significant amount of walking involved within the sanctuary grounds, especially if you wish to visit all the chapels and basilicas.

Can we purchase the Ginja de Óbidos liqueur as a souvenir, and where is the best place to do so?

Yes, Ginja de Óbidos is a popular souvenir. You can purchase it from numerous artisan shops and local stores within the medieval walls of Óbidos. Many establishments offer tastings, allowing you to choose your preferred brand. It's often sold in decorative bottles or, for immediate enjoyment, in small chocolate cups which you can consume on the spot.

Local detail

The journey to Fátima from Lisbon covers approximately 125 kilometers, taking around 1.5 hours. Upon arrival, you will visit the Sanctuary of Fátima, a site of profound religious significance. Key areas include the Basilica of Our Lady of Fátima, the Chapel of Apparitions, and the Basilica of the Holy Trinity. Following our visit to Fátima, we head west for about 60 kilometers to Nazaré, a coastal town famous for its giant waves. Here, we recommend lunch at one of the many excellent seafood restaurants near the Praia da Nazaré, offering fresh, locally caught fish. You can also visit Sítio, the highest point in Nazaré, for panoramic views of the Atlantic and the iconic lighthouse, home to the Nazaré Canyon surfing museum.

Our final stop is Óbidos, located about 40 kilometers southeast of Nazaré. This picturesque medieval village is encircled by ancient walls, which you can walk along for breathtaking views. Inside, explore the narrow, winding streets, whitewashed houses adorned with bougainvillea, and artisan shops. Don't miss sampling Ginja de Óbidos, a local cherry liqueur often served in a chocolate cup. The village is relatively small, making it perfect for a leisurely afternoon stroll before we return to Lisbon, approximately 85 kilometers away.
