Six centuries as the Roman province of Lusitania.
Roman armies crossed into modern Portugal in 218 BC and remained for around six centuries. The province of Lusitania, with its capital at Emerita Augusta (modern Mérida in Spain), covered most of present-day Portugal south of the Douro river.
