Portugal completed its Reconquista in 1249, almost 250 years before Spain.
The Reconquista was the long Christian campaign to retake the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim rule. In Portugal it lasted from the 9th century to 1249, when Afonso III captured Faro and the Algarve.
