The Portuguese Inquisition was established by papal bull in 1536 at the request of King João III, modelled on the Spanish Inquisition that had begun half a century earlier. It targeted Jews who had been forcibly converted to Christianity (the so-called New Christians or conversos), Muslims, Protesta
