Pastéis de Nata, the National Custard Tart
Gastronomy & Drink
A flaky pastry, a vanilla-yolk custard, a recipe born in a monastery.
The pastel de nata is the most exported Portuguese flavour. Created by Catholic monks at the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém before 1820, the recipe survived the dissolution of the monasteries and was sold to a sugar refinery next door.
