Ginjinha, the Lisbon Cherry Liqueur

Gastronomy & Drink

A small glass of sour cherry liqueur, served at marble counters since 1840.

Ginjinha is a Portuguese cherry liqueur made by macerating sour Morello cherries in aguardente with sugar and a touch of cinnamon. It is the unofficial spirit of Lisbon, traditionally drunk standing up at hole-in-the-wall counters, with the choice of com fruta (with cherries) or sem fruta (without).
