Half the world's cork comes from a single Portuguese region.
Portugal produces around 50 percent of the world's cork, all from the bark of the cork oak (Quercus suber). The oak grows mainly across the Alentejo, where vast estates of montado (open cork-oak woodland) are protected by law.
