Frequently asked questions

What kind of telescopes are used during the stargazing sessions?

Our partner astronomy guides utilize a range of professional-grade telescopes, typically including both reflector and refractor models, optimized for observing different celestial objects. The specific equipment may vary based on the guide and the night's viewing conditions, but all are chosen to provide clear, detailed views of planets, nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters.

Is prior astronomy knowledge required to enjoy the stargazing experience?

Absolutely not. Our stargazing experiences are designed for all levels of interest. The astronomy guides provide gentle, accessible talks that explain the basics of celestial navigation, constellation identification, and the science behind what you are observing. You do not need any prior knowledge to appreciate the beauty and wonder of the night sky.

What should I wear for an evening stargazing tour in the Dark Sky regions?

Even during warmer months, evenings in the Dark Sky regions, especially in the Alentejo and mountainous parts of Central Portugal, can get quite cool. We recommend dressing in layers, including warm clothing such as a jacket or sweater, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. A hat and gloves can also be beneficial, particularly during autumn and winter months, to ensure your comfort throughout the session.

Local detail

Our primary stargazing experiences are centered in the Alqueva Dark Sky Reserve, located in the Alentejo region. This area, surrounding the vast Alqueva lake, was the world's first certified 'Starlight Tourism Destination' by the Starlight Foundation, recognized by UNESCO. Its exceptionally low light pollution and clear atmospheric conditions create an ideal environment for astronomical observation. You will be driven to dedicated observation points within this reserve, often near towns like Monsaraz or Reguengos de Monsaraz, where our partners have established optimal viewing setups.

For those further north, we also offer experiences in Central Portugal, particularly in areas bordering the Serra da Estrela Natural Park. While not yet a certified Dark Sky Reserve, the higher altitudes and sparse population in these mountainous regions provide remarkably dark skies. Our partners here focus on specific viewpoints that offer expansive, unobstructed views of the celestial sphere. Both regions provide distinct perspectives on Portugal's commitment to preserving its night sky heritage.
