Top 10 Mistakes First-Time Visitors Make in Portugal

The planning errors we see most often, and the simple fixes that turn a rushed trip into a good one.
Almost every difficult trip we have helped rescue comes down to the same handful of decisions made months earlier. Here they are.
## The ten 1. Too many destinations. Seven days with five hotels is a transfer holiday, not a trip. Cut destinations, not days. 2. Underestimating the hills. Lisbon, Porto and Sintra all involve steep cobbled walking that maps do not show. 3. Trying to see three palaces in Sintra in one day. Two is already ambitious. 4. Booking Pena Palace without a timed ticket in high season. 5. Renting a car for a Douro wine day. Tastings and mountain roads are a poor combination. 6. Arriving in August expecting quiet beaches and easy restaurant tables. 7. Planning museums on a Monday, when most of them close. 8. Eating on the main squares. Two streets back is usually better and cheaper. 9. Leaving the Algarve to the last two days and then driving five hours to catch a flight from Porto. 10. Not leaving a single free afternoon. The unplanned hours are the ones people describe when they get home.
## Two fixes worth more than the rest Sleep in fewer places. Three bases in ten days is comfortable, five is not.
Plan around the weather and the light: monuments early, views late, lunch long. That single habit improves almost every day in Portugal.
## How we approach it When we build a private itinerary we start by removing things. The aim is that each day has a shape, one main visit, one secondary stop, and time that is genuinely yours. Tell us your dates and interests and we will tell you honestly what does not fit.
